The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah hold a special place in the Islamic calendar, recognized for their immense spiritual significance and the unparalleled rewards they offer for righteous deeds.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet said: "There are no days more beloved to Allah that He be worshipped in them than the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, fasting every day of them is the equivalent of fasting a year, and standing every night of them (in prayer) is the equivalent of standing on the Night of Qadr."
The Virtue of These Days: What Makes Them Special
The noble Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) emphasized this in his teachings, stating:
“There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice.”
He was asked, “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?” to which he replied:
“Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.”
This profound interaction highlights the extraordinary value of devotional acts during these ten days, surpassing even the merits of jihad, unless it involves the ultimate sacrifice. The Quran and Hadith collectively emphasize the importance of this period, offering profound insights for enhancing one’s faith and actions, thus making these days a prime time for spiritual renewal and commitment to righteous deeds.
The significance of these ten days is further amplified by the Quranic verse where Allah swears an oath, underscoring their importance: "By the dawn; By the ten nights" (Al-Fajr, 89:1-2). This reference to the 'ten nights' is often interpreted by scholars as the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, a period during which good deeds are beloved to Allah. This scriptural emphasis inspires believers to seek spiritual depth through increased worship, charity, and remembrance of Allah, thereby nurturing a profound connection with the Divine during these blessed days. And Allah also reminds us “Remember Allah during the appointed days.” [The Noble Qur’an, 2:203] With this Divine guidance, it becomes clear that the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are not just ordinary days; they are a profound opportunity for spiritual growth and increased devotion. Therefore, we should ardently increase our acts of worship during this sacred time, seeking to make the most of each day through specific acts that draw us closer to Allah. Here are nine such acts of worship enriched with Hadith and Quranic references to guide your observance of these blessed days.
ﷺ
1. Fasting, Especially on the Day of Arafah
Fasting during the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, especially on the Day of Arafah, has high rewards. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Fasting on the Day of Arafah forgives the sins of the past and coming year." (Muslim). The Quran also emphasizes, "And complete the fast until the sunset." (Al-Baqarah, 2:187). Fasting during this period brings immense rewards and spiritual purification.
2. Increased Salah (Prayers)
Performing Salah with greater devotion and punctuality during Dhul-Hijjah can significantly enhance spiritual connection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The best deed after faith in Allah is performing obligatory prayers." (Muslim). The Quran instructs, "Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers...and stand before Allah with obedience." (Al-Baqarah, 2:238). Use this time to perfect your prayers and strive to pray together with your community for multiplied rewards.
3. Charity
Giving charity during Dhul-Hijjah is highly virtuous. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The best charity is that given during prosperity." (Tirmidhi). The Quran encourages, "Spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]." (Al-Baqarah, 2:195). Sharing your wealth with those in need exemplifies compassion and generosity.
4. Reciting Quran
Engage in the recitation of the Quran during these blessed days. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The one who recites the Quran fluently will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels." (Muslim). The Quran states, "Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and perform prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish." (Fatir, 35:29). The Quran is a source of guidance and solace.
5. Performing Hajj and Umrah
Performing Hajj and Umrah during Dhul-Hijjah is a pinnacle of Islamic worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively; for they remove poverty and sin as bellows removes impurity from iron." (Nasai). The Quran commands, "And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah." (Al-Baqarah, 2:196). These acts cleanse the soul and renew spiritual commitment.
6. Sacrifice and Qurbani
The act of Qurbani, or sacrificing an animal, symbolizes devotion and obedience. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The son of Adam does not perform any actions on the day of sacrifice that is more pleasing to Allah than the spilling of blood [of the sacrificed animal]." (Tirmidhi). The Quran states, "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]." (Al-Kawthar, 108:2). This tradition commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah.
7. Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness
Repentance is a key aspect of worship during Dhul-Hijjah. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran, "And seek Allah’s forgiveness. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Quran 2:199). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Whoever repents before the sun rises from the west, Allah will forgive him." (Muslim). Make abundant istighfar by saying "Astaghfirullah" and seek Allah's mercy and guidance.
8. Dhikr and Remembrance of Allah
Engage in constant remembrance of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The Mufarridoon have gone ahead." When asked who the Mufarridoon were, he replied, "Those men and women who frequently remember Allah." (Muslim). The Quran promises, "And the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward." (Al-Ahzab, 33:35). Dhikr strengthens faith and brings tranquility.
9. Good Manners and Conduct
Upholding good manners is essential. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Nothing is placed on the Scale that is heavier than good character." (Abu Dawood). The Quran praises, "And indeed, you are of a great moral character." (Al-Qalam, 68:4). Exemplary conduct reflects the beauty of Islam and inspires others.
